Construction Wireman / Construction Electrician Program (CW / CE)

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 82, in partnership with the National Electrical Contractor’s Association (NECA) has adopted a new, flexible career development program that will allow you to:

• Earn while you learn

• Increase your income as you enhance your skill level

• Take advantage of healthcare and pension benefits as an IBEW member

• Apply your work hours and skills towards becoming a union Journeyman Wireman. 

Whether you are just starting out or have years of experience, the Construction Wireman / Construction Electrician program offers a career path that enables you to start working immediately.

Based on previous experience, electrical workers may enter the program at one of eight wage levels, with pay equivalent to to experience and training. 

How does it work

Once your application has been accepted, and drug testing and drug free workplace training has been completed, you will be assigned to a local Signatory Electrical Contractor.

• You will be placed in one of eight levels, designated as CW1-4 or CE5-8.

• Placement is based on the number of documented hours of previous electrical experience.

• To move up to the next level, you must reach the number of required hours and/or pass that level’s evaluation test.

• A worker with 14,000 job hours will qualify to take the certification test to become a Journeyman Inside Wireman.

Note that applicants with little or no previous experience, who are interested in becoming Journeymen Wiremen, are highly encouraged, but not required, to apply for entrance into the Apprenticeship program. Apprentices work alongside Journeymen and have regular class hours at the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC). All credits earned through the apprenticeship program can be applied toward a two-year Associates Degree at Sinclair Community College.

• All applicants must pass a drug-screening test, and must complete drug free work place training.

• No other training is required unless the worker desires to advance to a higher level.
